Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How much does it cost to play?
Our baseball and softball player fee for each season is $210. Our co-ed rookie league for 3-4 year old players is $150.
NYBSA is a not-for-profit organization. Each season consists of team practices, 10-12 regular season games, and an end of season tournament. Registration fees are used to cover all associated expenses (i.e. field maintenance, field lights, player uniforms, trophies, insurance or other administrative needs).
What is included with your registration?
Each baseball and softball player will receive the following each season:
- A fun, competitive baseball/softball season with a chance to learn and fall in love the game
- Discounts and deals to local business sponsers, inclduing baseball/softball clinics and camps.
- An exclusive 20% off coupon to Dick’s Sporting Goods that may be used during evaluation weekends!
- Team practices for player development, 10-12 regular season games, and an end of the season tournament
- Player Uniforms: Sublimated jersey, pants, cap (for baseball), and belt
- Participation trophies for our Teeball players and end of season winner/runner up trophies for our tournament winners in older leagues.
What equipment will be required to purchase?
Baseball: Each player will need a fielding glove, a bat, and a NOCSAE approved batting helmet. Helmet chin straps and face masks are required for our Rookie, Teeball, and Peewee leagues. “C-flap” helmets are an option for our Minor, Major, Pony, and Senior leagues.
Softball: Each player will need a fielding glove, a bat, a softball fielder’s mask, and a NOCSAE approved batting helmet. Helmet chin straps and face masks are required for all leagues.

What are the bat rules?
Baseball: Teeball, Peewee, Minor, and Major leagues allow any metal or composite bat that includes a “USA Baseball” stamp or a “USSSA BPF 1.15” stamp. Wood bats that are in good condition are also allowed. Pony/Senior league bats vary by age and division, so it is recommended that team coaches be consulted before purchasing bats in those leagues.
Softball: All bats must be 2-1/4" and include a “USA/ASA” stamp.
How long is each season?
Spring: Registration is open from December to February with team selections occurring the week that follows the last player evaluation date. Team practices begin immediately, Opening Day is around the first week in March, and the season ends the week before schools dismiss for the summer.

What happens at evaluations? Do we need to attend both sessions?
Each season, two separate evaluation sessions are held for each baseball and softball league. Players are only required to attend only one session, not both.
The purpose of evaluations is for the coaches and league commissioners to get a feel for the skill level of each player for the purpose of making teams in each league as even as possible.
Evaluations typically include fielding, batting, running, and pitching (if applicable) stations. Players should bring their own gloves, bats, helmets, and cleats, but they can also borrow equipment if they do not have their own or still have questions on what types of equipment they need to acquire.
What happens after evaluations? How do I know what team we are on?
Players are distributed to teams once both evaluation sessions have been completed. The first team practice is the Saturday after the last evaluation session, so players will hear from their coaches 2-3 days before that first practice.
When will I know our team schedule?
Season scheduling is not started until teams are selected. Practice times are set at the same time teams are selected. The game schedule for each league is usually finalized a week or two later.
Typically, most teams will have one practice/game on Saturday and one practice/game on a weeknight. This may vary slightly depending on the number of teams in each league and field availability.
What if I missed the registration deadline?
We do our best to make sure that we get every single interested player an opportunity to play each season. However, late additions may not be an option when considering available space left in a league, uniform order deadlines, or situations that may disrupt balanced team distributions. We STRONGLY recommend that all players are registered before the deadline to guarantee a spot on a team.

What if I want my child to play in a different age group?
For safety reasons, we strongly discourage children from playing in a different age group; however, we do consider them on a case-by-case basis. Please email the baseball/softball commissioner and player agent to request a different age group. Any play-up or play-down requests must evaluate for BOTH leagues. League commissioners will make final decisions based on both skill level AND if the overall number of participants in each league allows the change.
Can we be on the same team as our friends? Do you allow rideshares?
We make every effort to make teams as fair and as balanced as possible; therefore, we do not allow friends to be tethered to other friends’ teams and we do not allow “rideshares.” The only players that are “locked” on teams are the children of the two volunteer coaches on each team.
